FreeThreads

FreeThreads has been set up to allow the development of WWWThreads to continue now that WWWThreads is no longer released under the GNU General Public Licence. FreeThreads provides web-based discussion groups, similar to Usenet newsgroups, but without the NNTP access. Nightly email digests are available to save users having to visit the site daily to check for new, interesting, posts. The WWWThreads Demo/Support Forum provides an example of a running WWWThreads site, note this is the commercial WWWThreads product, not FreeThreads, but there isn't much difference to the new user at the moment.

Mailing Lists

Two mailing lists currently exist, a low-volume moderated one for announcements, freethreads-announce, and for people interested in development, freethreads-devel. The latter will also get any CVS commit logs copied to it although if they become high-volume and annoying a third list will be created just for them.

CVS Repository

The source is stored under CVS. Anonymous, read-only, access is available using pserver. When prompted for a password on login simply press Enter.

$ repos=cvs.freethreads.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/freethreads
$ cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@$repos login
$ cvs -z 3 -d :pserver:anonymous@$repos co freethreads
For a project developer, full access to the repository is provided using ssh.
$ CVS_RSH=ssh; export CVS_RSH
$ repos=cvs.freethreads.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/freethreads
$ cvs -z 3 -d username@$repos co freethreads
The repository can also be browsed thanks to CVSweb.

For more information on using CVS see SourceForge's CVS page which includes references to more complete documentation.

Open Source Alternatives

Other Open Source spin-offs from WWWThreads were created after its departure from the GNU GPL. All of them seem to be in their early stages, some have perished on the vine.

There are also projects that don't have WWWThreads as an ancestor.
